Purpose

The mobster’s purpose is to get this guys money (Although their rhetorical elements could use some work)

The definition of purpose changes a bit under a rhetorical context. In this case, purpose is the reason why someone is persuading an audience and the desired outcome of the situation as a whole. For example, the rhetorical purpose of this website is to make sure future students of Writing for the Sciences clearly understand what the course entails. I knew this before the class, but the importance of making your purpose subtle was reinforced through examples of communities we may want to appeal to. If someone feels like they’re being catered towards or pandered to, they are less likely to listen to the message of the speaker. Since scientific writing covers very important topics, it’s crucial that our audience feels like they are respected by our writing, and that they don’t feel like an ends to a means to fulfill our obvious purpose.
